10,000 Maniacs is an American alternative rock band that was formed in 1981 in Jamestown, New York. The band's original members were Natalie Merchant (vocals), John Lombardo (guitar), Robert Buck (guitar), Steve Gustafson (bass), and Dennis Drew (keyboards). They released their debut album, "The Wishing Chair," in 1985, and gained popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
One of their most successful albums was "In My Tribe," released in 1987, which featured the hit singles "Like the Weather" and "What's the Matter Here?" Natalie Merchant left the band in 1993 to pursue a solo career, and Mary Ramsey took over as the lead vocalist. 10,000 Maniacs continued to release music and tour with Ramsey as the frontwoman. The band's music is characterized by thoughtful lyrics, melodic hooks, and a blend of folk, rock, and pop influences.
