A Tribe Called Quest is an American hip hop group formed in 1985 in Queens, New York City. The group is composed of members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. Known for their unique jazz-influenced sound, socially conscious lyrics, and innovative production, A Tribe Called Quest is considered one of the most influential and groundbreaking hip hop groups of all time.
The group released five studio albums between 1990 and 2016, including critically acclaimed and commercially successful projects such as "The Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders." A Tribe Called Quest's music often explores themes of Afrocentrism, unity, and positivity, and they are credited with helping to shape the sound and direction of hip hop during the 1990s. The group disbanded in 1998 but reunited in 2006 and continued to perform and release music until Phife Dawg's death in 2016.
