He achieved mainstream success in the 1960s with hits like "Java" and "Cotton Candy," which both reached the top 10 on the Billboard charts.
Hirt won a Grammy Award for Best Performance by an Orchestra - for Dancing in 1964 and was a frequent guest on popular TV shows like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show. He also performed at major events such as the Super Bowl and the opening of the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans.
