He is best known for his hit songs "Lonely Boy" and "Thank You for Being a Friend," which was later used as the theme song for the popular TV show "The Golden Girls." Gold was a multi-instrumentalist, proficient in playing guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums, and he often provided backing vocals for other artists.


Throughout his career, Andrew Gold released several solo albums and worked as a session musician for artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, and Art Garfunkel. He also co-wrote the song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" for the movie "Grease," which was nominated for an Academy Award.
