Aretha Franklin, born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist often referred to as the "Queen of Soul." Franklin began her career singing gospel music in her father's church and signed with Columbia Records in 1960. She achieved commercial success in the late 1960s and 1970s with hit songs such as "Respect," "Natural Woman," and "Chain of Fools."


Franklin was known for her powerful voice and emotive delivery, which earned her numerous accolades including 18 Grammy Awards. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was named the greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2010. Aretha Franklin passed away on August 16, 2018, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential and iconic voices in American music history.
