He is best known for his hit single "Sweet Soul Music," which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967. The song was a tribute to soul music pioneers such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and James Brown.

Conley began his music career in the 1950s as a gospel singer but transitioned to secular music in the 1960s. He recorded several albums and singles throughout the 1960s and 1970s, but "Sweet Soul Music" remains his most popular and enduring song. Conley's soulful voice and energetic performances solidified his reputation as a talented soul artist during the height of the genre's popularity in the 1960s. He passed away on November 17, 2003, but his music continues to be celebrated for its contribution to the soul music genre.
