Ashford & Simpson were a husband-and-wife songwriting and recording duo consisting of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. They were known for their successful career as R&B and soul music singers, songwriters, and producers. The duo started their musical partnership in the 1960s, writing hit songs for artists such as Ray Charles, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Ashford & Simpson released a series of successful albums, including "Send It," "Stay Free," and "Solid." Their biggest hit as performers was the song "Solid," which reached the top of the R&B charts in 1984. Ashford & Simpson were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. They continued to perform and write music until Nickolas Ashford's passing in 2011.
