The Bar-Kays are an American soul and funk band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1966. Originally a session group for Stax Records, they eventually released their own music, becoming one of the leading groups in the funk genre. The band's lineup has changed over the years due to tragic events, including the deaths of several members in a 1967 plane crash that also took the life of Otis Redding. Despite these setbacks, the Bar-Kays continued to produce music, with hits such as "Soul Finger" and "Shake Your Rump to the Funk."
Throughout their career, the Bar-Kays have collaborated with notable artists like Isaac Hayes and have received critical acclaim for their energetic live performances. The band's music has been influential in shaping the funk sound of the 1970s and beyond, solidifying their legacy as pioneers in the genre.
