The Bar-Kays are an American soul, R&B, and funk band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1966. The group originally consisted of six members, including James Alexander, Ben Cauley, Ronnie Caldwell, Phalon Jones, Carl Cunningham, and Jimmy King. The band gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s with hits such as "Soul Finger" and "Son of Shaft."
Tragically, in 1967, four members of the Bar-Kays were among the victims of the plane crash that also claimed the life of Otis Redding. Despite this devastating loss, the group reformed with new members and continued to produce music. Over the years, the Bar-Kays have released numerous albums and singles, and they are known for their energetic live performances and contributions to the funk and soul music genres. The band's enduring legacy has solidified their place in music history as influential figures in the development of funk music.
