Benny Spellman was an American rhythm and blues singer born on December 11, 1931, in Pensacola, Florida. He was best known for his hit single "Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)", which was released in 1962 and reached number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Spellman was a part of the New Orleans music scene in the 1960s and worked with renowned producer and songwriter Allen Toussaint.
In addition to his solo career, Spellman also provided backing vocals for other artists, including Ernie K-Doe and Dr. John. He was a member of the vocal group The Zion Harmonizers before pursuing a solo career. Spellman's music has been influential in the development of rhythm and blues and soul music, and he is remembered for his distinctive voice and energetic performances. Benny Spellman passed away on October 3, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of soulful music that continues to be celebrated by fans and musicians alike.
