Betty Harris is an American soul singer who gained prominence in the 1960s. She was born on September 9, 1939, in Orlando, Florida. Harris started her music career in New York City, where she signed with Jubilee Records in 1962. She later moved to New Orleans and began recording with songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint.


Harris released several singles with Toussaint, including "Cry to Me" and "Nearer to You," which became popular hits in the southern soul music scene. Despite her success, Harris retired from the music industry in the early 1970s. In the years since, her recordings have gained a cult following among soul music enthusiasts. Betty Harris' soulful voice and emotive delivery continue to be celebrated by fans of the genre.
