Bill Doggett was an American jazz and R&B pianist and organist who was born on February 16, 1916, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his 1956 instrumental hit "Honky Tonk", which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the R&B chart. Doggett's style blended jazz, R&B, and blues influences, and he was a prominent figure in the early development of soul music.


Throughout his career, Doggett recorded numerous albums and singles, often with his band the Bill Doggett Combo. He continued to perform and record music until his passing on November 13, 1996, in New York City. Doggett's contributions to the music industry have left a lasting impact, and he is remembered as a talented musician who helped shape the sound of R&B and soul music during the mid-20th century.
