Born on February 20, 1941, in Saskatchewan, Canada, she is known for her powerful and thought-provoking music that often addresses issues such as indigenous rights, environmentalism, and social justice. Sainte-Marie gained prominence in the 1960s with songs like "Universal Soldier" and "Cod'ine," which became anthems of the anti-war movement.


In addition to her music career, Buffy Sainte-Marie is also a passionate advocate for indigenous rights and education. She has been involved in various humanitarian causes and founded the Cradleboard Teaching Project, an educational curriculum devoted to bringing Native American culture and history into classrooms. Throughout her career, Sainte-Marie has received numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Up Where We Belong" from the film "An Officer and a Gentleman."
