Cal Smith was an American country music singer and guitarist, born on April 7, 1932, in Gans, Oklahoma. He is best known for his hit songs in the 1970s, including "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking" and "Country Bumpkin." Smith began his music career in the 1950s as a member of Ernest Tubb's band, the Texas Troubadours. In the 1960s, he signed with Kapp Records and released several singles that achieved moderate success.
In 1974, Cal Smith signed with MCA Records and scored his biggest hit with "Country Bumpkin," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Throughout his career, Smith released a total of 23 albums and had numerous charting singles. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999. Cal Smith passed away on October 10, 2013, at the age of 81.
