Staton began her career in the 1960s, releasing her first single "I'd Rather Be an Old Man's Sweetheart (Than a Young Man's Fool)" in 1969. She gained mainstream success in the 1970s with hits such as "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim".
Staton's music often blends elements of soul, R&B, and disco, and she has been recognized for her powerful and emotive vocal delivery. In addition to her solo career, she has also collaborated with other artists and released duets with the likes of Al Green and Clarence Carter.
