Carla Thomas is an American singer, often referred to as the Queen of Memphis Soul. She was born on December 21, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. Thomas began her music career in the early 1960s and signed with Stax Records, where she became one of the label's most successful artists.
In 1961, Carla Thomas achieved her first hit with the song "Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)," which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She continued to release a string of successful singles throughout the 1960s, including "B-A-B-Y" and "I Like What You're Doing (To Me)." Thomas also collaborated with artists like Otis Redding, with whom she recorded the classic duets "Tramp" and "Knock on Wood." Carla Thomas was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2016, recognizing her significant contributions to the soul music genre.
