Karen Carpenter was known for her contralto vocal range and Richard Carpenter for his skills as a pianist, composer, and arranger. Their music was characterized by lush melodies, intricate harmonies, and Karen's emotive vocals. The Carpenters won three Grammy Awards and sold over 100 million records worldwide before Karen's untimely death from heart failure due to complications from anorexia nervosa in 1983. Despite their short-lived career, the Carpenters remain one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
