He gained international fame with his 1960 hit cover of Hank Ballard's R&B song "The Twist," which became a dance craze and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Checker's version of the song sparked a worldwide dance phenomenon and solidified his status as a rock and roll icon.
