Claude King was an American country music singer and songwriter born on February 5, 1923, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is best known for his hit single "Wolverton Mountain," which reached number one on the country charts and number six on the pop charts in 1962. The song was inspired by a real person named Clifton Clowers, who lived on Wolverton Mountain in Arkansas and became King's most famous song.
Throughout his career, King released numerous other songs that achieved moderate success on the country music charts. Some of his other notable hits include "The Comancheros" and "Big River, Big Man." King was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008. He passed away on March 7, 2013, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy as a talented country music artist with a distinctive voice and storytelling style.
