Claude King was an American country music singer and songwriter born on February 5, 1923, in Louisiana. He is best known for his hit single "Wolverton Mountain," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1962. The song, inspired by a real-life person named Clifton Clowers who lived on Wolverton Mountain in Arkansas, became King's signature song and a classic in the country music genre.


In addition to "Wolverton Mountain," Claude King had several other chart-topping hits during his career, including "Big River, Big Man" and "The Comancheros." King was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008 in recognition of his contributions to country music. He continued to perform and record music until his passing on March 7, 2013, leaving behind a legacy as a respected artist in the country music industry.
