Cledus Maggard was a fictional character created by Jay Huguely, a songwriter and producer. Cledus Maggard And The Citizen's Band was a novelty music act that released a single titled "The White Knight" in 1976. The song became a surprise hit, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was a spoken-word tale about a trucker who becomes a hero by using his CB radio to help foil a robbery.

The success of "The White Knight" led to the release of an album called "The White Night" by Cledus Maggard And The Citizen's Band. Despite the initial success of the single, the group did not produce any more significant hits, and Cledus Maggard faded into obscurity.
