McPhatter was best known for his powerful high-pitched tenor voice and was a key figure in the development of R&B music in the 1950s.
McPhatter was the lead singer of the influential vocal group The Drifters and later pursued a successful solo career. Some of his most popular songs include "Money Honey," "Such a Night," and "A Lover's Question." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Drifters in 1988, recognizing his significant contributions to the genre.
