The band's original lineup consisted of Lionel Richie, Thomas McClary, Milan Williams, William King, Ronald LaPread, and Walter Orange.

The Commodores achieved commercial success with their blend of funk, soul, and R&B music, earning multiple Grammy nominations and winning one Grammy Award for their hit single "Nightshift" in 1985.
