C.W. McCall is the stage name of William Dale Fries Jr., an American country music singer, songwriter, and trucker who rose to fame in the 1970s. He is best known for his hit song "Convoy," released in 1975, which reached number one on both the country and pop charts. The song's success led to a film of the same name, as well as a series of CB radio-themed albums.
Born in 1928 in Audubon, Iowa, Fries adopted the persona of C.W. McCall for his music career, drawing inspiration from his experiences as a truck driver. In addition to "Convoy," he had several other charting singles, including "Wolf Creek Pass" and "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Cafe." C.W. McCall's music often featured storytelling lyrics and a country-rock sound, making him a unique figure in the country music scene of the 1970s.
