The band achieved commercial success with hits such as "Make It with You," "If," and "Baby I'm-A Want You." Gates was the primary songwriter for the group, known for his heartfelt lyrics and soothing vocals.


In addition to his work with Bread, David Gates also had a successful solo career, releasing several albums and singles. He continued to write and perform music throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with songs like "Goodbye Girl" and "Took the Last Train."
