David Seville, whose real name was Ross Bagdasarian Sr., was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actor. He is best known for creating the fictional singing chipmunk trio Alvin and the Chipmunks. In 1958, he released the novelty song "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" under the name David Seville, which became a massive hit and earned him three Grammy Awards. The success of the song led to the creation of the Chipmunks characters, with Alvin, Simon, and Theodore becoming iconic figures in popular culture.
Outside of his work with the Chipmunks, Seville had a successful career as a songwriter and producer, working with artists such as Rosemary Clooney and Johnny Burnette. He continued to release music under the name David Seville throughout the 1960s, including several albums featuring the Chipmunks. Ross Bagdasarian Sr. passed away in 1972, but his legacy lives on through the enduring popularity of the Chipmunks characters and their music.
