He is best known for his 1961 hit single "Runaway," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song featured Shannon's distinctive falsetto vocal style and a catchy keyboard riff played on a musitron, giving it a unique sound that stood out in the early 1960s music scene.

In addition to "Runaway," Del Shannon had several other chart-topping hits, including "Hats Off to Larry" and "Little Town Flirt." He continued to release music throughout the 1960s and 1970s, experimenting with different styles and genres. Shannon's influence on rock and roll music is widely recognized, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. Tragically, he passed away on February 8, 1990, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music that continues to be celebrated by fans and musicians around the world.
