Artist Bio:
Del Shannon, born Charles Weedon Westover in 1934, was an American rock and roll singer and songwriter. He is best known for his 1961 hit single "Runaway," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song features Shannon's distinctive falsetto vocals and a memorable keyboard riff played on a musitron, a keyboard instrument he invented. "Runaway" was a huge commercial success and established Shannon as a major figure in the early 1960s rock and roll scene.
Shannon continued to release music throughout the 1960s and 1970s, with hits such as "Hats Off to Larry" and "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow the Sun)." He also achieved success as a songwriter, penning songs for other artists such as the Beach Boys. Despite struggles with depression and substance abuse, Del Shannon's influence on rock and roll music endures, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. Shannon tragically passed away in 1990, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the music industry.
