Del Shannon was an American rock and roll and pop singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the early 1960s. Born Charles Weedon Westover on December 30, 1934, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Shannon is best known for his hit song "Runaway," released in 1961, which reached the top of the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The song features Shannon's distinctive falsetto vocals and a prominent keyboard riff played on a musitron, a forerunner of the modern synthesizer.
Shannon had several other hits throughout the 1960s, including "Hats Off to Larry" and "Little Town Flirt." He was known for his energetic live performances and continued to release music throughout his career. Shannon struggled with personal issues, including alcoholism, but continued to perform and record music until his death by suicide on February 8, 1990. Despite his tragic end, Del Shannon's music remains influential in the rock and roll genre.
