Diana Ross & The Supremes were an American vocal group formed in 1959. The group originally consisted of founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross. They were one of the most successful Motown acts in the 1960s, with twelve number one hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group's sound was characterized by Ross's distinctive lead vocals, as well as their catchy melodies and polished harmonies.
In 1970, Diana Ross left the group to pursue a solo career, and the group was renamed The Supremes. Despite the lineup changes, The Supremes continued to release successful singles throughout the 1970s. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, recognizing their impact on popular music and their contribution to the Motown sound.
