Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was an American singer and pianist known for her versatile vocal style that blended jazz, blues, and R&B. She began performing in Chicago in the 1940s and gained popularity for her powerful voice and emotional delivery. Washington signed with Mercury Records in the 1950s, where she recorded several hits including "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "Unforgettable."


Washington was a highly influential artist in the music industry, earning the nickname "Queen of the Blues." She received multiple Grammy nominations and won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Performance in 1959. Washington's career was tragically cut short when she passed away on December 14, 1963, at the age of 39. Despite her untimely death, Dinah Washington's impact on music continues to be celebrated, and she is remembered as one of the greatest female vocalists of the 20th century.
