Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was an American singer known for her powerful and distinctive voice. She began her music career in the 1940s as a gospel singer before transitioning to jazz and blues. Washington quickly gained popularity for her emotional delivery and ability to interpret songs with raw intensity.


In her career, Dinah Washington recorded numerous hits, including "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "Unforgettable." She was known for her versatility, effortlessly moving between jazz, blues, R&B, and pop music. Washington was a trailblazer in the music industry, becoming one of the first African American women to achieve mainstream success as a solo artist. She won a Grammy Award in 1959 for Best Rhythm & Blues Performance. Dinah Washington's influence can still be heard in the work of contemporary artists and she remains a revered figure in the history of American music.
