Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones on August 29, 1924, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was an American singer and pianist. She was known for her powerful voice and versatility, excelling in various genres such as jazz, blues, R&B, and pop. Washington began her career singing in church choirs and later joined the Lionel Hampton Band as a vocalist in the 1940s. She went on to achieve commercial success with hits like "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "Unforgettable."


Washington was one of the most popular and influential female vocalists of her time, earning several Grammy nominations and winning a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Performance in 1959. Despite her untimely death at the age of 39 in 1963, Dinah Washington's legacy lives on through her timeless music, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.
