Known as the "Queen of the Blues," she had a successful career in jazz, blues, and R&B music. Washington began performing in church as a child and later joined the Lionel Hampton Band as a vocalist in the 1940s. She signed with Mercury Records in the 1950s and had numerous hits including "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "Unforgettable."

Washington was known for her powerful voice, emotional delivery, and ability to blend jazz and blues influences in her music.
