Dire Straits was a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), his younger brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and vocals), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums). The band's sound combined elements of rock, jazz, folk, and blues, with Mark Knopfler's distinctive fingerstyle guitar playing being a defining feature of their music.
Their self-titled debut album, released in 1978, featured the hit single "Sultans of Swing" which helped propel the band to international fame. Dire Straits achieved massive commercial success with their 1985 album "Brothers in Arms," which included the iconic songs "Money for Nothing" and "Walk of Life." The band disbanded in 1995, with Mark Knopfler continuing a successful solo career. Dire Straits' music continues to be influential, with their unique blend of rock and storytelling lyrics earning them a place in rock history.
