Dobie Gray, born Lawrence Darrow Brown, was an American singer and songwriter known for his soulful voice and hits in the genres of R&B, pop, and country music. He was born on July 26, 1940, in Simonton, Texas, and began his music career in the 1960s. Gray's most famous song is "Drift Away," released in 1973, which became a major hit and remains a classic to this day. The song reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has been covered by numerous artists.


Gray continued to release music throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with several songs making it onto the charts. In addition to his solo career, he also collaborated with other artists and songwriters. Dobie Gray passed away on December 6, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of soulful music that continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
