Shirley was considered a child prodigy and went on to study music at several prestigious institutions, including the Leningrad Conservatory of Music in the Soviet Union. He was known for his unique blend of classical, jazz, and popular music styles.
Shirley gained widespread recognition for his virtuosic piano playing and innovative arrangements. He performed in various venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall and the White House. Shirley also composed music for films and released several albums throughout his career. He is perhaps best known for his role in the 2018 film "Green Book," which depicted his concert tour in the racially segregated South in the 1960s.
