Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show was an American rock band formed in Union City, New Jersey in 1968. The band achieved commercial success in the 1970s with their humorous and often risqué lyrics, catchy hooks, and country-influenced rock sound. They are best known for their hit songs "Sylvia's Mother," "Cover of the Rolling Stone," and "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman."


The band was led by vocalist Ray Sawyer and featured members such as Dennis Locorriere, George Cummings, and Rik Elswit. Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show released several albums throughout the 1970s before disbanding in 1985. They left a lasting impact on the music industry with their unique blend of rock, country, and comedy, earning a dedicated fan base that continues to enjoy their music to this day.
