Eddie Harris was an American jazz musician known for his pioneering work on the tenor saxophone and for his experimentation with fusion and crossover genres. He was born on October 20, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, and began his career in the 1950s playing with notable jazz artists such as Gene Ammons and Max Roach. Harris gained recognition for his innovative use of electronics in his music, particularly with the saxophone, incorporating instruments like the electric saxophone and the Varitone (an electronic device that modified the sound of the saxophone).
Throughout his career, Eddie Harris released over 45 albums as a leader and collaborated with a diverse range of musicians, including Les McCann and pianist Ramsey Lewis. He is perhaps best known for his hit single "Listen Here" from his album "The Electrifying Eddie Harris," which reached the top of the jazz charts in the 1960s. Harris continued to perform and record until his passing on November 5, 1996, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking music that continues to influence jazz and fusion artists to this day.
