Esther Phillips, born on December 23, 1935, in Galveston, Texas, was an American singer known for her versatile vocal style that ranged from jazz to R&B and soul. She began her music career at a young age, performing in local clubs and eventually touring with bandleader Johnny Otis. In 1950, she signed with Federal Records and released her first hit single, "Double Crossing Blues," which topped the R&B charts.
Throughout her career, Phillips recorded numerous albums and singles, including the critically acclaimed "Burnin'" and "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes," which won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1975. Despite battling personal struggles with addiction, Phillips continued to perform and record music until her death on August 7, 1984, at the age of 48. Esther Phillips is remembered as a talented and influential artist whose soulful voice left a lasting impact on the music industry.
