Five Special was an American R&B and funk band formed in Detroit, Michigan in the mid-1970s. The group consisted of Steve Shockley, Bryan Banks, Michael Petillo, Tres Gilbert, and Mike Leslie. They were known for their harmonious vocals, tight musical arrangements, and energetic live performances. Five Special released their self-titled debut album in 1979, which included the hit single "Why Leave Us Alone." The song reached number 24 on the Billboard R&B chart and became a classic in the genre.


Despite their talent and critical acclaim, Five Special did not achieve mainstream commercial success and disbanded in the early 1980s.
