Gene Chandler, born Eugene Dixon, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his 1962 hit song "Duke of Earl," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Chandler was a prominent figure in the Chicago soul music scene and was a member of the Dukays before launching a successful solo career. He earned the nickname "The Duke of Earl" after the success of his signature song.
In addition to "Duke of Earl," Gene Chandler had several other hits in the 1960s and 1970s, including "Groovy Situation" and "Rainbow." He was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014 in recognition of his contributions to the music industry. Chandler continues to perform and record music, maintaining a dedicated fan base of soul and R&B music enthusiasts.
