Gene Chandler, born Eugene Dixon on July 6, 1937, is an American singer and songwriter known for his success in the music industry during the 1960s and 1970s. He is best known for his hit song "Duke of Earl," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1962. Chandler's smooth and soulful voice, combined with his energetic stage presence, earned him the nickname "The Duke of Earl."


In addition to "Duke of Earl," Chandler had several other successful singles, including "Groovy Situation" and "Rainbow." He was a prominent figure in the Chicago soul music scene and was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2014.
