Gene Chandler, born Eugene Dixon, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his 1962 hit song "Duke of Earl," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Chandler began his music career in the late 1950s as a member of the doo-wop group The Dukays before launching a successful solo career. He was known for his smooth, soulful voice and charismatic stage presence, earning him the nickname "The Duke of Earl."
In addition to "Duke of Earl," Chandler had several other hits in the 1960s and 1970s, including "Groovy Situation" and "Rainbow."
