Gene Pitney was an American singer-songwriter who was born on February 17, 1940, in Hartford, Connecticut, and passed away on April 5, 2006. He was best known for his powerful voice and emotional ballads. Pitney gained popularity in the 1960s with hits such as "Town Without Pity," "Only Love Can Break a Heart," and "24 Hours from Tulsa."
Pitney was also a successful songwriter, penning songs for himself as well as for other artists, including "He's a Rebel" for The Crystals. Throughout his career, he recorded over 20 albums and had multiple top 40 hits. Pitney was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and continued to perform and tour until his untimely death in 2006.
