Gladys Knight And The Pips were an American R&B/soul group formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1952. The group originally consisted of siblings Gladys Knight, Merald "Bubba" Knight, Brenda Knight, and cousins Eleanor Guest and William Guest. They gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s with hits such as "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Midnight Train to Georgia". Gladys Knight, known as the "Empress of Soul", served as the lead vocalist of the group and was praised for her powerful and soulful voice.


The group received critical acclaim for their tight harmonies and energetic performances, earning multiple Grammy Awards throughout their career. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Gladys Knight And The Pips disbanded in 1989, and Gladys Knight continued her successful music career as a solo artist.
