Hank Ballard and The Midnighters were an American R&B and doo-wop group formed in Detroit in 1952. The group consisted of lead singer Hank Ballard, as well as Charles Sutton, Sonny Woods, Alonzo Tucker, and Norman Thrasher. They were known for their energetic performances and risqué lyrics, which set them apart from other acts of the time. One of their most famous songs, "The Twist," was released in 1959 and later popularized by Chubby Checker. The song became a major hit and sparked a dance craze that swept the nation.
Hank Ballard and The Midnighters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Their influence on the development of rock and roll and rhythm and blues music is widely recognized, with their unique sound and provocative lyrics making them stand out in the music industry of the 1950s and 1960s.
