Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes were an American R&B/Soul group formed in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The group was originally known as The Charlemagnes before changing their name to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in the 1960s. The group's original lineup consisted of Harold Melvin as the lead vocalist, Bernard Wilson, Lawrence Brown, and Teddy Pendergrass.
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes achieved their greatest success in the 1970s with hits such as "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "The Love I Lost." The group's soulful sound and tight harmonies made them a popular act during the Philadelphia soul era. Teddy Pendergrass eventually emerged as the group's lead singer and went on to have a successful solo career after leaving the Blue Notes in 1976. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes continued to perform and record music throughout the 1980s.
