Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes were an American R&B/Soul group formed in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The group's original members were Harold Melvin, Bernard Wilson, Roosevelt Brodie, Jesse Gillis, and Franklin Peaker. However, the most notable lineup of the group included lead singer Teddy Pendergrass, who joined in 1970.
The group achieved mainstream success in the 1970s with hits such as "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "The Love I Lost." They were signed to Philadelphia International Records, a label founded by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes are considered one of the pioneering groups of the Philadelphia soul sound. Teddy Pendergrass's powerful and emotive vocals were a key element of their success. The group's music continues to be celebrated for its soulful sound and heartfelt lyrics.
