The group's music was known for its upbeat, positive messages and danceable beats, with a mix of hip hop, R&B, and dancehall influences. They achieved commercial success with their albums such as "Living Large" (1987) and "Big Tyme" (1989), which included hits like "Now That We Found Love" and "Somebody for Me".

Heavy D & The Boyz were pioneers in the hip hop genre, blending rap with catchy melodies and incorporating elements of reggae and dance music in their sound. They were known for their energetic live performances and positive lyrics, which set them apart from some of their more hardcore contemporaries in the rap scene. Heavy D continued to have a successful solo career after the group disbanded, before his untimely death in 2011.
